In a disturbing case that has shaken the local community, a 37-year-old teacher from a school in Ivory Park appeared in the Kempton Park Magistrate’s Court on Friday. The teacher is facing allegations of rape involving a 17-year-old female learner under his instruction. The matter has been remanded until March 13 for a formal bail application.
According to information presented in court, the educator is accused of engaging in sexual intercourse with the learner, whom he allegedly taught. The incident is said to have occurred in December 2025, after the teacher reportedly offered additional private tutoring services to the learner outside of official school hours at his residence. He was arrested on March 4 in Birchleigh North by members of the Norkem Park SAPS.
Police reportedly located him at his brother’s residence after he allegedly attempted to arrange a meeting with the victim’s parents in an effort to have the case withdrawn by offering money, which the parents reportedly refused. The Gauteng Department of Education has confirmed that it has initiated internal investigations into the matter. In a statement released on March 5, Gauteng MEC for Education Matome Chiloane expressed the department’s deep concern over the allegations, stating that educators are entrusted with the responsibility of nurturing and guiding our learners, and that they must always contribute towards ensuring the safety, well-being, and development of our learners at all times.
