Two suspects in the recent tavern assault in Imbali, where two men beat a woman and struck her with a hard object, appeared in the Pietermaritzburg Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday. Linda Bethwell Khumalo (42), had been sentenced to 10 years for armed robbery in 2015. The other man, Siphesihle Michael Ngidi (46), had no previous convictions, the court heard.

They handed themselves over to Plessislaer police on Sunday accompanied by their lawyer advocate Hlanganani Dlomo. Initial reports were that the incident allegedly happened on December 28 but, according to the charge sheet, it was on Christmas Day. The 41-year-old woman was allegedly struck on the forehead with a hard object, kicked in the ribs and body, beaten with fists, and thrown to the floor with intent to kill her, the charge sheet read.

Dlomo opposed the remand, insisting that all information had already been provided to the investigating officer. I went to Plessislaer police station with my clients and they provided everything. There is no reason for bail to be opposed as they handed themselves over to the police and I was there with them.
