Student leaders in Southern Province rally behind…

Student leaders from various higher learning institutions in Southern Province have declared their support for President Hakainde Hichilema ahead of the August 13 general elections, citing government programmes which they say have benefited young people. Speaking during a gathering in Livingstone, Zambia National Students Union (ZANASU) President, Innocent Nshindano, said students in the province were rallying behind President Hichilema because of initiatives such as the Constituency Development Fund (CDF), meal allowances and bursaries. Mr Nshindano urged eligible voters to participate in the August 13 elections, saying the student body was committed to supporting the President’s re-election.

Meanwhile, Livingstone Institute of Business and Engineering Studies (LIBES) Students’ Union President, Leonard Samende, said many students at the institution had accessed higher education through CDF bursaries. Mr Samende said the union had resolved to support President Hichilema, arguing that government programmes had expanded educational opportunities for young people. And Victoria Falls University Students’ President, Gloria Kalyobwe, also expressed confidence that President Hichilema would secure another term in office.

Ms Kalyobwe said government policies, including free education, youth empowerment initiatives and constitutional reforms under Bill 7, had created opportunities for young people. She encouraged fellow students to continue participating in national development and leadership. On the other hand, Livingstone College of Nursing and Midwifery Students’ President, Ian Siantami, said students had confidence in the President because of what he described as increased recruitment of health workers and other professionals over the past five years.

Mr Daka expressed hope that more students would continue benefiting from bursaries and scholarships.And, Mulungushi University School of Medicine and Health Sciences Students’ President, Gideon Chaambwa, appealed for peaceful elections, urging young people to maintain peace before, during and after the polls.Also, former nursing student and ZANASU Southern Province Coordinator, Braveden Mungo, encouraged young people to volunteer during the campaign period and ensure they carried their voter registration cards.Mr Mungo also called for continued recruitment of nurses, teachers and other professionals to strengthen public service delivery.
