A passenger aircraft belonging to local airline StarSky crashed in shallow water shortly after taking off from Aden Adde International Airport in Somalia, authorities have confirmed. The plane went down along the shoreline of the Indian Ocean, not far from the airport perimeter, after reportedly experiencing technical difficulties while attempting to gain altitude, theMirrorreports. According to initial reports, the aircraft departed from Runway 23 before encountering problems moments after take-off.

Witnesses near Jasiira Beach said the plane was flying unusually low before it skipped across the shallow waters and came to rest on the shoreline. Photos circulating from the scene appeared to show the aircraft’s wing completely detached, as crowds gathered nearby to observe the wreckage. Emergency response teams arrived within minutes of the crash.

“The priority was ensuring there was no post-impact fire, given the proximity to the water,” an airport official said. “We are relieved to report that everyone on board was evacuated safely.” The Somali Civil Aviation Authority (SCAA) confirmed that all 55 passengers and crew members survived the incident without fatalities. The authority said the crash occurred in a coastal area just outside the airport’s western boundary.

Following the accident, the SCAA announced it has launched a formal investigation to determine the cause of the crash. Airport operations were briefly suspended to allow emergency services access to the shoreline, but Aden Adde International Airport has since reopened and resumed normal flights. Further details are expected as investigators examine the aircraft and review flight data.
