Cape Town residents will gather in Claremont on 18 April for a 67 Blankets for Nelson Mandela Day Creativity and Innovation Day event, bringing handmade blankets, yarn and community spirit together to support vulnerable communities. Cape Town residents are invited to pick up their knitting needles this weekend as a nationwide movement brings a day of creativity and community spirit to Claremont. The event, hosted by67 Blankets for Nelson Mandela Day, will take place at the Congregational Church on Main Road on Saturday, 18 April, from 9am to 1pm.
Entry is free. Attendees are encouraged to bring along their handmade blankets for display, while wool donations will also be accepted. A “bring and share” meal is planned as part of the gathering.
The Cape Town event forms part of celebrations markingWorld Creativity and Innovation Day, with similar gatherings scheduled in Johannesburg, Durban, White River and Gqeberha. Organisers say the initiative aims to turn simple acts of creativity into practical support for people in need, with volunteers invited to knit or crochet blankets that will be distributed to vulnerable communities. The event also coincides with a leadership transition within the organisation.

“Annie’s passion, organisational skills and deep commitment to the movement make her the perfect person to help guide our operations as we continue to expand our impact across South Africa.” Robinson Grealy said in a statement that her focus would be on strengthening the network of volunteers and ambassadors behind the initiative. “This movement has touched thousands of lives and continues to grow because of the generosity of ordinary South Africans,” she said. Founded in 2013, the organisation has mobilised volunteers across the country to produce blankets for hospitals, shelters, schools and other vulnerable communities.
