In a shocking case of corporal punishment, a Gauteng teacher accused of assaulting a Grade 11 pupil atTetelo Secondary Schoolin Protea North, Soweto, was released on bail on Wednesday. Mpho Ramapatsi made a brief appearance in theProtea Magistrate’s Courtwhere she is facing a charge of assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm. The court heard that the learner had been instructed to write a 150-word essay but submitted 308 words.

Ramapatsi is accused of punishing the pupil by delivering one lash for every additional word written beyond the prescribed limit. During her court appearance, Ramapatsi wore a niqab and only showed her eyes. A niqab isa veil worn by Muslim women that covers the face, leaving the eyes exposed The incident remains under investigation, with Ramapatsi scheduled to return to court on April 8, 2026.
