Pet owners in the Midlands are being urged to stay alert as veterinarians report a noticeable increase in snake bite cases in recent weeks. According to Midlands Veterinary Hospital, the seasonal shift toward autumn has triggered heightened snake activity, with reptiles taking advantage of warmer days to hunt before winter sets in. As the weather cools and days become shorter, snakes are preparing for the colder months ahead, “They are particularly active on warmer days, trying to build up fat reserves for winter,” the hospital said in a warning to pet owners.
Midlands Veterinary Hospital said they have recorded a spike in cases involving pets getting bitten by snakes, advising pet owners to exercise extra caution, especially in environments such as rocky areas and wood piles, which provide ideal shelter for snakes. According to African Snakebite Institute, Howick has around 35 different types of snakes. “Four species are considered highly venomous while six others can inflict a rather painful bite.
Seven species are considered midly venomous and sixteen species are harmless,” said Johan Marais. The hospital also stressed the importance of correctly identifying the snake involved in a bite incident, as this can be critical in determining the appropriate treatment.
