HARARE – A Rusape-based small-scale gold miner who allegedly splurged on several vehicles and hosted a lavish wedding has been arrested on money laundering charges. Regayi Chipanga, 45, appeared before Harare magistrate Jessie Kufa on Thursday and was released on US$300 bail. The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) said Chipanga was arrested after police received information that he was “living lavishly, buying several assets and developing his rural home” in Village A, Nyahukwe, Rusape.

“It was further stated that the accused person was carrying out an extravagant wedding at his place of residence,” said prosecutor Oscar Madhume. Upon his arrest, investigators recovered a Honda Vezel, two Toyota Probox vehicles, and US$1,700 in cash. When questioned, Chipanga allegedly told police that he acquired the assets through gold prospecting in the Bindura area, but without the required documentation.

The vehicles and cash were subsequently seized as suspected proceeds of crime, with prosecutors arguing that Chipanga had no lawful right to acquire or possess the assets in the manner alleged. Police told the court they intend to arrest Chipanga’s brother, Sydon Chipanga, and recover “more vehicles” as investigations continue.
