The death toll from a horrific crash on the N2 near Umtubatuba has risen to six, with all the victims believed to be members of the same family. KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Transport and Human Settlements Siboniso Duma described the tragedy as “unbearable” and said his department will send a support team and religious leaders to visit the grieving family on Sunday afternoon. The crash happened on Friday night in the Inkosi Umtubatuba Local Municipality when a Corsa carrying the family collided with a truck.

In a statement issued on Saturday, Duma said the department had initially hoped that a young girl who survived with serious injuries would recover, but she later died in hospital, bringing the number of fatalities to six. “We have no words to describe the pain that the Mnyango family is going through following the death of six family members,” said Duma. • Nokuphakama Mnyango (85)• Makhosi kaMnyango Mthembu (52)• Mvuyani Gcaleka (43)• Senamile Buthelezi (29)• Banzi Buthelezi (6)• Ayanda Pearl Mthembu Duma said he has ordered a full investigation into the crash.

“We admit that there are no appropriate words we can use to stop the pain each surviving family member is experiencing. Only God has the power to heal and mend broken hearts,” he said. He confirmed that a team from his office and the department will visit the family in Ward 11 under the Umfolozi Local Municipality at 1pm on Sunday.
