Shootout during KZN cash-in-transit heist

A dramatic cash-in-transit (CIT) robbery unfolded on Old Inanda Road in Brindhaven, KwaZulu-Natal, on Monday afternoon. The robbery left a trail of explosions, gunfire and a damaged security response vehicle as heavily armed suspects fled toward Inanda. Reaction Unit South Africa (Rusa) said it began receiving several calls from members of the public just before 1.30 pm reporting a robbery and loud explosions in the area.

Rusa spokesperson Prem Balram said officers were dispatched to the scene, where they were met with gunfire from what they believe were “spotters”. “No injuries were reported. The suspects fled in two vehicles described as a white Toyota Cross and a white Toyota Corolla, and were travelling in the Inanda direction,” said Balram in a statement.

He said the suspects fired shots into the air as they sped away. Balram said Rusa deployed its Robinson R44 helicopter to assist in tracking the fleeing suspects. While reaction officers conducted a coordinated ground search, the helicopter crew carried out an aerial sweep of the area.

“Due to the suspects being heavily armed, the pilot was instructed to maintain a safe operational distance. During the search, the helicopter crew spotted a female member of the public waving and directing their attention to a nearby farm.
