Residents in northern KwaZulu-Natal have been urged to brace for severe thunderstorms on Thursday, with heavy downpours, damaging winds and hail forecast across several districts. The South African Weather Service (Saws) said isolated to scattered showers and thundershowers are expected over most parts of the province, with conditions likely to intensify over the north-western areas. “Severe thunderstorms accompanied by heavy downpours, damaging winds, excessive lightning and hail resulting in localised flooding and damage to infrastructure and settlements are expected over the north-western parts on Thursday,” Saws said.
Indaka and Ladysmith, Dannhauser, eDumbe, eMadlangeni, Endumeni, Inkosi Langalibalele (Escourt and Sobabili), Mpofana (Giants Castle and Mooi River), Msinga, Newcastle, Nkandla, Nongoma, Nquthu, Okhahlamba, Ulundi and uPhongolo. The weather office warned that some storms could result in localised flooding of susceptible roads and bridges, minor motor vehicle accidents due to slippery conditions and poor visibility, and possible damage to infrastructure and settlements. Saws advised residents to avoid travelling on low-lying bridges and flood-prone roads, as these may become dangerous or develop sinkholes.
“Take caution or avoid travelling on bridges and roads in low-lying areas as these may be susceptible to flooding and there may be sinkholes.” Residents have also been urged to avoid outdoor activities during storms, remain indoors away from windows, and ensure pets, livestock and vehicles are sheltered. Move livestock and cars to safe sheltered areas as there may be flying debris.
