Scorchers one of 3 teams with straight wins

The Scorchers are one of just three out of 16 teams to have won both their first two group matches at the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (Wafcon) in Morocco. Following the completion of match day two on Sunday evening, the Malawi National Women’s Football Team, hosts Morocco’s Atlas Lionesses and Cameroon’s Indomitable Lionesses stand proudly as the only teams with a 100 percent winning record going into the final round of matches. Malawi, who top Group C with six points, beat holders and 10-time winners Nigeria’s Super Falcons 3-2 in their debut at the continental showpiece before seeing off Egypt’s Cleopatra 3-1.

On the other hand, Morocco, who lead Group A, beat Kenya and Algeria 4-0 and 1-0, respectively, while Cameroon, who top Group D, beat Mali 2-1 and Ghana 1-0. Scorchers’ France-based captain Tabitha Chawinga has since said the record is a big boost going into their final decisive group match against Zambia’s Copper Queens tomorrow. She said: “It further boosts our confidence as a team because much as we are making our first appearance, we are not looking down upon ourselves.

“It is not easy to have such a record at this stage of a big tournament, but we have to remain focused and remain hungry for success. So, it is a motivation. Scorchers coach Lovemore Fazili said he is happy with the players’ character.
