SAPU demands accountability at IDAC after abrupt withdrawal of charges against crime intelligence head

Crime Intelligence boss Dumisani Khumalo appeared before the Ad Hoc Committee. The South African Policing Union is amplifying its demand for accountability and urging bold, transformative leadership changes at IDAC. Sapu’s Lesiba Thobakgale is calling for action against IDAC officials for their ‘reckless, premature or procedurally flawed decisions’ that led to the provisional withdrawal of fraud and corruption charges against Crime Intelligence head Dumisani Khumalo and his co-accused.

This comes after the State reversed course in its case against Crime Intelligence headDumisani Khumaloand his co-accused. The union has sharply criticised IDAC’s tactics, accusing them of arbitrarily arresting and publicly humiliating members based on incomplete investigations. They demand that those behind reckless, rushed, or flawed decisions face accountability.

Their statement comes after National Director of Public Prosecutions Director Andy Mothibi ordered that charges be withdrawn against Crime Intelligence head Lieutenant-General Dumisani Khumalo and six others. The union sees this decision as validation of their early warnings and highlights ongoing concerns about rushed arrests and unfinished investigations. Mothibi on Monday instructed that the charges against Khumalo, Major General Philani Lushaba, Major General Nosipho Precious Madondo, Major General Josias Lekalaka, Major General Zwelithini Gabela, Brigadier Phindile Ncube andBrigadier Dineo Mokwelebe withdrawn.

The accused had faced fraud and corruption charges linked to the appointment of Mokwele to a senior position within Crime Intelligence. During her testimony before the Madlanga Commission last Thursday (23 July), former IDAC head Andrea Johnson presented Mokwele’s curriculum vitae, qualifications, and supporting documents.
