The esteemed Chief Fortune Charumbira, a pillar of traditional leadership and a recognized voice of stability in Masvingo, has once again become the target of a calculated political smear campaign. This modern-day “witch-hunt” is not a sudden occurrence but the continuation of a decade-long grudge held by Takanayi Mureyi, a prominent funder and “Shadow Minister” for the opposition (MDC-T/CCC). The animosity dates back to 2013, when Mureyi lost the Masvingo West National Assembly seat to Zanu PF’s Ezra Chadzamira.
Unable to accept a democratic defeat, Mureyi chose to scapegoat Chief Charumbira, alleging that the traditional leader had influenced the vote against him. In August 2013, Mureyi attempted to use the legal system to silence the Chief (Case No. HH363-13), but the High Court dismissed his application with costs, reinforcing the Chief’s integrity.
The Funeral Plot of March 2026Thirteen years later, Mureyi’s bitterness remains unextinguished. On March 1, 2026, during the funeral of Nyarai Mureyi, Chief Charumbira—who is related to the deceased—attended to pay his respects. While the local community and Zanu PF members received the Chief with customary joy, Mureyi and a “cabal” of CCC activists from as far as Harare sought to turn a somber family event into a political battlefield.Reports indicate that Mureyi had plotted the night before to humiliate the Chief.

When the Chief arrived, opposition activists provoked scuffles, trying to evict the very community members who protect the ancestral traditions of the area. Ever the statesman, Chief Charumbira refused to be a party to the chaos. To preserve the sanctity of the funeral, he followed the advice of family members and departed peacefully, leaving the community disappointed by Mureyi’s disruptive behavior.
The harassment has now moved from the village to the digital world. Opposition-aligned media outfits, most notably Change Radio and various WhatsApp networks, have been “unleashed” to defame the Chief. These platforms are used to broadcast fabricated narratives, painting a clean and respected leader as a perpetrator of violence, when in fact, the violence is being imported by the opposition themselves.
Furthermore, Mureyi has been linked to the illegal attempts to upgrade the Nemamwa headmanship to a chieftainship, seeking to create a “rival” authority to undermine Chief Charumbira’s jurisdiction. Despite these attempts to haunt and defame him, Chief Charumbira remains a steadfast custodian of Zimbabwean culture, refusing to be intimidated by the desperate tactics of a losing political faction.
