Robbers escape with vehicle, cash worth US$15 000

Lovemore Kadzura Post Reporter A BRAZEN armed robbery at Dewedzo Business Centre in Makoni West has left a local couple shaken and counting huge losses after being ambushed by five masked men at their homestead, where they were subjected to a terrifying ordeal The robbers, armed with machetes, stormed Angela Mudoni and her husband John Nyakunu’s home, demanding cash and car keys In a desperate bid to protect themselves, Mudoni revealed to them that they kept cash at their grocery shop, and handed over the keys to the robbers While some of the robbers raided the shop, making off with US$5 000, airtime, and groceries, others remained at the homestead, holding the couple and their maid, Getrude Chitupa, hostage

The three victims were indiscriminately attacked with the blunt side of the machetes, leaving them battered and bruised Acting Manicaland provincial police spokesperson, Assistant Inspector Wiseman Chinyoka, confirmed the incident, adding that the robbers eventually fled the scene in the couple’s white Mazda Bongo vehicle (AGN 4826) The shocking incident has sent shockwaves through the usually tranquil community, leaving villagers on high alert “On August 2, 2025, around 8:30pm, Mudonhi and Nyakunu closed their shop at Dewedzo (St Bedes) Business Centre, and proceeded to their home using a white Mazda Bongo (AGN 4826)

Upon arrival at their homestead, five unknown male accused persons entered the house through an open door, armed with machetes The first accused person ordered the complainants to lie down on their stomachs, including Chitupa, and the complainants complied The accused person assaulted the complainants indiscriminately, using the back of the machetes, while demanding cash and car keys “Mudoni then told the accused persons that they had left all their cash in the shop, and she surrendered the shop and vehicle keys to the accused persons

Two of the accused persons proceeded to the shop, leaving three others guarding the complainants “After ransacking the shop, the accused persons took US$5 000 cash, airtime, and some groceries, and they came back to the complainant’s homestead, picked up their colleagues, and went away using the complainant’s vehicle On August 3, 2025, the complainants proceeded to Dewedzo Police Base and reported the case ZRP Rusape Rural and CID Rusape attended the scene, and no arrests have been made,” said Assistant Inspector Chinyoka

Assistant Inspector Chinyoka further said the value of stolen goods is US$15 000, and nothing has been recovered He appealed to members of the public with information leading to the arrest of the suspects to report to their nearest police station “Mudoni sustained a swollen backside, Nyakunu sustained a deep cut on the nose, and Chitupa sustained a deep cut on the upper part of the eye They were all referred to Rusape General Hospital for treatment and medical examination, and are all in a stable condition
