Atlas, a Belgian Malinois–Boerboel mix rescued by TEARS Animal Rescue, has made a remarkable recovery after being found starving and chained, and is now ready for adoption. A Belgian Malinois–Boerboel mix rescued from severe neglect in the South Peninsula is now ready for adoption following a remarkable recovery, TEARS Animal Rescue said on Monday. Atlas was found several years ago by TEARS’ Mobile Clinic team while conducting outreach work in underprivileged communities.

The dog was starving, chained up and suffering from ehrlichiosis, a potentially fatal tick-borne disease, when he was surrendered to the organisation. At the time of his rescue, Atlas weighed just 16kg and had painful wounds caused by prolonged chaining. After medical treatment and rehabilitation, his weight has increased to a healthy 30kg, and TEARS says he is now a gentle, energetic and affectionate dog.

TEARS provides pet food support to families in need in the South Peninsula and operates a Mobile Clinic that offers sterilisation and basic veterinary care to community pets. TEARS operations manager Mandy Store said Atlas’s recovery highlighted the importance of animal welfare interventions. “When Atlas arrived at TEARS, his condition was critical.
