Renowned conservationist Ivan Carter has praised the passionate members of Friends of Bisley Nature Reserve (FoBNR) for protecting a rare intact ecosystem close to a city. He was among the guests of honour at FoBNR’s awards ceremony held last Thursday night at the Intaba Game Reserve Eco Estate clubhouse, which brought together FoBNR members, supporters, animal lovers and representatives from the Msunduzi Municipality to recognise individuals and organisations contributing to the reserve’s survival. Known for his television series Wildlife Animal Rescue (W.A.R) and for leading the reintroduction of 24 lions into Mozambique’s Zambeze Delta, Carter said his global conservation work had taught him one key lesson.
“No matter where you go in the world, you won’t find one successful conservation story without passion,” he said. Carter noted that intact ecosystems were becoming increasingly rare, particularly near urban centres, but said Bisley Nature Reserve stood out despite its proximity to the city. While several contributors were recognised on the night — including Remington Risk Management, committee members, youth champions andThe Witnessreporter Kayla Shaw — the central tribute was reserved for wildlife veterinarian Ryan van Deventer, who has been involved with FoBNR since its inception.
FoBNR chairperson Peter West recounted Van Deventer’s dedication in the field, sharing stories of him wading neck-deep through marshland, removing large thorns from his foot with pliers, and being electrocuted by an electric fence while restraining a darted giraffe. Our committee is unanimous, without Ryan, FoBNR would never have existed. “We, and the animals, owe you an immeasurable debt of gratitude,” West said. Van Deventer was presented with a painting by wildlife artist Ingrid Fouché, inspired by a photograph taken byThe Witnessphotographer Moeketsi Mamane during a zebra foal rescue.
