South African President Cyril Ramaphosa has expressed deep concern over the escalating conflict in the Middle East, urging all parties to exercise maximum restraint as the fallout begins to disrupt South African air travel. The Presidency condemned violations of international law and warned that intensifying hostilities pose a serious threat to regional and global peace, with far-reaching humanitarian, diplomatic and economic consequences. The statement follows disruptions to international flights on Saturday after Israel and the U.S.’s attacks on Iran triggered the temporary closure of airspace in parts of the Gulf region.

In a notice issued from Doha, Qatar Airways confirmed that flight operations to the Qatari capital had been suspended until midnight UTC due to the closure of Qatari airspace. Acsa spokesperson Ofentse Dijoe urged passengers to contact their respective airlines or relevant embassies directly for the latest updates on flight schedules and travel arrangements. In its statement, the Presidency stressed that all actions must remain consistent with international law, international humanitarian law and the principles of the United Nations Charter. It referenced Article 51 of the UN Charter, noting that self-defence is permitted only when a state has been subjected to an armed invasion, and that anticipatory self-defence is not recognised under international law.
