Crime & CourtNewsBy founding editor Nigel PfundeHarare- Prophetic Healing andDeliverance (PHD) Ministries founder Walter Magaya has been remanded in custody until November 13, following his court appearance on allegations of rape and fraud.Magaya, who appeared at the Harare Magistrates’ Court under heavy police guard and in handcuffs was denied immediate release as prosecutors opposed bail citing the seriousness of the charges and the risk of interference with witnesses.The court heard that Magaya faces multiple counts of rape and large-scale fraud linked to the operations of his church and business entities chiefly Planet Africa where him and his wife Tsitsi invaded Dr Gideon Gono’s farm and sold land to unsuspecting home seekers in a typical Bonnie and Clyde fashion.He is being held at Harare Remand Prison pending further proceedings.His annual Night of Turn Around lyes in limbo as uncertainty of his freedom hovers around him as the wheels of justice keep rolling.Unless if the justice delivery system turns around the verdict!Meanwhile, his wife,Tenda who was also arrested in connection with the fraud allegations appeared before a separate magistrate for her bail hearing which is still ongoing as we write.PHD Ministries congregants gathered outside the court some singing and praying for their leader’s release, while others were seen weeping as Magaya was led away by prison officers.The State alleges that the offences were committed over several years, involving church followers and investors who claim to have been defrauded of large sums of money.Court proceedings are set to continue next week with Magaya expected to reappear on November 13 for routine remand and further direction from the prosecution.Magaya’s case is reminiscent of the late clergyman Robert Gumbura’s case who acted ‘untouchable’ through his perceived political connections and was also charged with multiple rape of congregants and poetic justice played out.Leave a ReplyCancel reply
