HARARE – The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) has issued a stern warning to rogue drivers and criminal elements ahead of the Heroes and Defence Forces holidays, vowing to take “decisive action” against all lawbreakers to ensure public safety on the roads and in communities In a statement released on Tuesday, police said they had deployed adequate manpower across the country’s road network to monitor traffic and enforce the law during the 45th anniversary commemorations of the national holidays “The Zimbabwe Republic Police has deployed adequate manpower on the roads to ensure the public travels safely,” the statement read “Decisive action will be taken against motorists who flout road rules and regulations.”
The police specifically warned that unroadworthy vehicles, pirate taxis (mushika shika), buses operating without permits, unregistered and plateless vehicles will be impounded
Motorists caught driving under the influence of alcohol will be arrested “Drivers found to be driving under the influence of alcohol will be arrested for the law to take its course,” the ZRP emphasized Public service vehicle operators were also put on notice, with police condemning the use of touts who harass and intimidate passengers “Public service vehicle transport operators are warned against overloading vehicles and engaging touts
Some of the touts are engaging in various criminal acts to the detriment of public safety,” the statement added Motorists were urged to cooperate fully with law enforcement officers “Drivers are encouraged to cooperate with police officers on checkpoints and patrols to collectively promote road safety.”
Beyond traffic enforcement, the Commissioner-General of Police has directed Police Commanders to step up patrols in residential, industrial, and central business districts Officers have been ordered to arrest those found dealing in drugs and other illicit substances.
