According to police, Makufa first bludgeoned 55-year-old Constaine Mabheka before turning on Kunashe Mabheka, a four-year-old girl, and fatally striking her.
He then ambushed Atilda Mharadze, 19, killing her instantly.
All three died on the spot.
Makufa has since been arrested.
Bulilima Massacre Just Days Earlier This bloodshed followed another rampage just five days earlier in Madlambuzi, Bulilima.
On August 13, Phamani Sibanda, 43, also described as a mental patient, stormed through Bellas and Central villages, killing five people and injuring two others.
Armed with a Mopani log, blunt objects, and a sharp weapon, Sibanda’s victims included some of the area’s most vulnerable residents.
Among the dead were Elliot Khupe (101), Butho Tshuma (97), Constance Sibanda (66), Catra Matsika (72), and Tiffan Surprise Ndlovu (6).
Two women — aged 90 and 41 — were left badly injured and were rushed to Madlambuzi Clinic and Plumtree District Hospital.
Police Urge Families to Seek Help Early Reacting to the tragedies, police said the back-to-back killings highlight a growing crisis of untreated mental illness leading to deadly violence.
Police spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi warned the public to be extra cautious when dealing with individuals with known mental health problems.
He said families should not ignore warning signs and must make sure their loved ones get medical help in time. “The Zimbabwe Republic Police urges the public to exercise caution, particularly when interacting with individuals with mental health challenges.
We implore families and guardians of individuals with mental health issues to seek professional help and ensure that they receive the necessary support and treatment on time,” Nyathi said.
