Police came under fire in Elsies River on Tuesday as a police vehicle was struck by a bullet while officers responded to a shooting in Clark Estate. The shocking incident unfolded on Old Stellenbosch Road when police rushed to reports of gunfire and were met by a hostile crowd, with shots ringing out and one bullet hitting a police vehicle, on Tuesday. Police spokesperson Constable Ndakhe Gwala said: “Elsies River Police attended a complaint of a shooting in progress at Old Stellenbosch Road, Clark Estate.
“Upon arrival, they saw a group of people gathered then they heard gunshots coming from the crowd. Police registered a case of attempted murder, attack on police and public violence for further investigation.” Meanwhile, the Acting Minister of Police Oversight and Community Safety in the Western Cape Tertius Simmers strongly condemned the brazen and reckless act of violence. Simmers said: “Any attack on law enforcement is an attack on the rule of law and represents a direct threat to the safety and security of our communities.
