Police in uMgungundlovu have issued a firm festive-season warning, with SAPS rolling out roadblocks, liquor outlet inspections, and increased patrols to tackle drunken driving, drug abuse, and violent crime.uMgungundlovu District SAPS commissioner Major-General Mduduzi Shezi has called on young people to abstain from substance abuse and drug use, warning that it fuels crime across the district. Shezi was speaking at the Career Exhibition and Youth Crime Indaba held at Caluza community hall on Monday, themed “Connect with Leaders Who Care About Your Future”. The event combined career guidance with crime-prevention messaging aimed at helping young people make informed choices.

We want to urge young people to abstain from consuming substances and drugs. “Amid the festive season, SAPS will be highly visible, targeting liquor and drug outlets,” Shezi said. He warned that drug dependency often drives criminal behaviour.

“People often engage in criminal activities just to sustain their lifestyle of buying drugs, as they are expensive,” he said. Shezi said police would also intensify roadblocks to deal with drunken driving. “We want young people not to engage in drugs and alcohol, as that will lead to a decrease in criminal activities,” he added. He said youth-related crime remained a major concern, including robberies, rape — particularly linked to clubs and taverns — house break-ins, business robberies, and assaults, stressing that reducing alcohol and drug abuse would have a direct impact on these crimes.
