Police in Eastern Province have claimed that their presence at Patriotic Front (PF) presidential hopeful Makebi Zulu’s residence in Mambwe District was prompted by security and public safety concerns. Provincial Police Commanding Officer, Robertson Mweemba, said officers were acting on intelligence suggesting a suspected illegal assembly following Zulu’s visit to his home area. Speaking to journalists on Monday, Mweemba revealed that a crowd of between 250 and 300 people had gathered at Zulu’s residence, raising safety concerns for both the public and law enforcement.
“The operation was not intended to harass anyone but to ensure the safety of the crowd,” he said. Mweemba added that Zulu informed the police that he had not visited his home village for two years, which explained the overwhelming turnout of supporters and residents. However, the Police Chief emphasized that the former Malambo Member of Parliament should have notified the police beforehand, given the size of the gathering.
Earlier today, police officers raided Zulu’s residence, surprising the PF presidential aspirant, who is currently visiting his home village. Local residents said a heavy police presence surrounded the property in the early hours of the morning. Eyewitnesses reported that dozens of officers cordoned off the area as the operation unfolded, drawing attention from the community.
