The Zambia Police Service has launched an investigation into a case in which a five-month-old child was allegedly stolen. The incident occurred on November 30, 2025, at around 09:00 hours in Chipata Compound, Lusaka, according to Police Spokesperson Godfrey Chilabi. Chilabi said in a statement on Monday that Emmasdale Police Station received a report later the same day, around 15:00 hours, from Grace Tembo, 26, a resident of Chipata Compound.

Grace reported that her daughter had been taken by a woman identified only as Mary, believed to be from Kapiri Mposhi. “The brief facts of the matter are that the mother was at her home when the suspect asked her to accompany her to a nearby shop to buy a drink for the baby and offered to carry the child,” Chilabi said. While at the shop, the suspect gave the shopkeeper a K200 note to purchase the drink, but the shopkeeper informed her that he had no change.

The suspect then handed the note back to the mother to get change and told her she would meet her with the child at a truck loaded with charcoal nearby. “When the mother returned to the shop, both the suspect and the child were missing. Efforts to locate the suspect at the mentioned charcoal truck were unsuccessful, and the matter was subsequently reported to the police,” Chilabi stated.
