Pietermaritzburg crime fighters this week raised KZN’s flag high at the National Excellence Awards in Bloemfontein, hosted by the South African Police Service (SAPS). The Mountain Rise SAPS Community Policing Forum (CPF) secured third place nationally, while acting unit commander of the Greytown family violence, child protection and sexual offences unit was named Investigator of the Year. “By reaching this point of being nominated for your exceptional service, you are already winners,” said national commissioner of the South African Police Service, General Fanie Masemola, at the event on Monday.

Naidoo (56), who has worked in the sector for 33 years, said the award was a reflection of the efforts of his team. We deal with sensitive matters and no one deserves what they experience. “We have an exceptional team, and this award is the result of their dedication and hard work,” Naidoo said.

The Mountain Rise CPF, which operates in the Mountain Rise policing precinct, has played a pivotal role in combating crime and supporting the local community. One of the initiatives launched by the CPF last December, together with other stakeholders, to combat crime in the Raisethorpe CBD was the placement of a caravan outside Nedbank, staffed by Mountain Rise SAPS officers and private security personnel. The aim of the initiative is to curb crimes such as pickpocketing and scams by improving police visibility and making it easier for members of the public to report criminal activity. Several entities, including private security companies, had committed to ensuring the caravan is staffed at all times to assist residents and shoppers.
