The Piggly Wiggly weekly parkrun has been suspended in support of the local farmers to prevent further spread of foot and mouth disease (FMD). According to reports, KwaZulu-Natal is regarded as the epicentre of the disease, with December’s confirmed outbreaks being 207, with 187 to still be resolved. Sharing the suspension on its official website on Thursday, the race organisers said that it had been a difficult decision, but a necessary one that supports the local farmers “during this difficult time” and prevents the spread of foot and mouth disease.
“We thank you for your continued support and will provide an update as to when the route will be open again,” Piggly Wiggly parkrun said. The next parkrun, due to take place on Saturday, January 10, has been cancelled. The run before suspension took place on every Saturday at 8 am with runners taking part in a 5km community event.
“Parkrunners” can walk, jog, run, volunteer or spectate at Dargle Road, Lions Rivers. The course starts at the upper end of the Piggly Wiggly parking area and follows the dirt road down and around the back of the complex where participants enter a gate leading into the lower main field before following the boundary fence loop around the field. After exiting the lower field, you turn right and climb up past the Manor House followed by a “S” loop through the upper field and the small treelined forest. “Once you exit the forest, you follow the back boundary fence and enjoy a gentle climb up, ‘Piggly Wiggly Polly Shorts’, after which it is a gentle stroll into the finish,” explained the page.
