Safe City Msunduzi’s surveillance network has once again proven effective after a suspected intruder was detected and arrested at the Riverside primary electrical substation on Thursday. At 11:25 am, a Safe City CCTV camera operator spotted a man running towards and entering the substation. Safe City monitors eight primary substations using a combination of technologies to prevent intrusions, vandalism and theft.
Using the Public Address system installed at the Riverside site, the operator alerted the on-duty security guard, who swiftly apprehended the intruder. While monitoring the situation, the Safe City team immediately notified municipal security, the police and E2 project partners to ensure a rapid response. Within four minutes, police officers and a local security company, AET, arrived at the scene.
Safe City later confirmed that the suspect was wanted in connection with multiple house break-ins in Scottsville, where he had allegedly been operating with two accomplices. The suspect and one accomplice were arrested and charged with housebreaking. Stolen items were recovered.
