Eleven people were injured in a collision involving a taxi and a bakkie in Margate, KZN south coast, on Tuesday morning, with paramedics later attending to a second, more serious crash near Pietermaritzburg that left 17 people injured, including several children. KwaZulu Private Ambulance Services spokesperson Craig Botha said paramedics were dispatched at about 10.30 am to a crash on National Road, just outside Sebenza Village, where a Toyota Hi-Ace taxi and a double-cab bakkie had collided. “Emergency responders encountered a chaotic scene with significant damage to both vehicles and debris scattered across the roadway,” Botha said.
Two people suffered serious injuries and were stabilised on scene by advanced life support paramedics, while nine others suffered minor injuries. All were transported to nearby medical facilities for further care. Police, the local fire department and law enforcement officials were also on scene.
The roadway was heavily obstructed for some time while emergency crews treated the injured and cleared the wreckage. The cause of the collision is under investigation. Later in the day, at about 1 pm, KwaZulu Private Ambulance Services responded to a mass casualty collision on the M70 in the Embundweni area, just outside Pietermaritzburg.

Botha said paramedics arrived to find a head-on collision involving a Toyota Quantum minibus taxi and a hatchback vehicle, both sustaining extensive damage. “Due to the number of patients, paramedics immediately initiated a mass casualty triage protocol,” he said.
