A shopper was airlifted to a Level 1 trauma hospital on Thursday evening after collapsing at a shopping centre in Howick, KwaZulu-Natal. According to Midlands EMS, its Howick crews rushed to the scene at around 6.20pm following reports that a patient had suddenly collapsed. When paramedics arrived, they found the individual in a critical condition and facing a life-threatening medical emergency.

Crews immediately began advanced life-support treatment on scene as the patient’s condition rapidly deteriorated. Given the urgency and the need for specialised medical intervention, Netcare 911’s aeromedical helicopter was activated for rapid transport. “The patient was stabilised, placed on a manual ventilator, and prepared for airlift.

The helicopter landed at a designated landing zone near the centre, where paramedics handed the patient over to the aeromedical team for the flight to hospital,” said Midlands EMS spokesperson Roland Robertson. K9 Hunter and Africa 911 Tactical assisted with securing the area for the helicopter’s arrival, while Howick law enforcement officers provided essential ground support, he said. Authorities were also present as emergency teams worked to ensure a safe and swift evacuation.
