The spirit of football’s golden years came alive at the Hillview Grounds last weekend as former stars reunited for an emotional Padsa Old Timers gathering. The event drew a strong crowd of families and friends, all eager to celebrate a rich sporting heritage rooted in passion, pride and community. Nostalgia filled the air as former players reflected on their journeys in the game, sharing stories of memorable matches, enduring friendships and hard-earned victories.
The reunion also provided a moment of remembrance, as attendees paid tribute to team-mates who have since passed on. Speaking on behalf of the Padsa Old Timers Football Association, Kosheelan “Sox” Naiker said the event was aimed at preserving the organisation’s history while strengthening bonds among former players. “We want to keep the legacy alive and ensure that the stories and experiences of those who built the game are never forgotten,” he said.
The gathering was not only about reflection, but also celebration, with some of the veterans lacing up their boots once more for a friendly match that rekindled the excitement of years gone by. Wolves Sporting Club commended the organising committee for hosting a meaningful and well-supported event, highlighting the lasting influence these players have had within their communities. Meanwhile, efforts to restore football to its former vibrancy in the northern areas of Pietermaritzburg are gaining momentum. The Northern Areas Soccer Stream (Nass), formerly known as the Pietermaritzburg and District Soccer Association (Padsa), is working tirelessly to revive the sport in Northdale and surrounding areas, including Copesville, Swapo, Ezinketheni, Woodlands, Site 11, Eastwood, Thembalihle, Tamboville, Glenwood and Sobantu.
