More than 3,500 people from various opposition political parties, including the Patriotic Front (PF) and some independent councillors, have defected to the ruling United Party for National Development (UPND) inChingola. The defectors were received at Kaunda Square in Chiwempala by UPND Copperbelt Province ChairpersonElisha Matambo. Matambo said the UPND remains an inclusive party with space for every Zambian, urging both long-standing and new members to work together in unity and mutual respect.

He emphasised the importance of teamwork, stating that all members would be treated equally within the party. Matambo further expressed confidence in PresidentHakainde Hichilema’s leadership, saying he has a clear vision for the country and is poised to secure a landslide victory in the August 2026 general elections. Among those who defected are PF Kasompe Ward CouncillorMartin Lombeand Muchinshi Ward CouncillorMoses Kaputunga, among others.
