The arrest follows the circulation of disturbing footage in which the woman is allegedly confronted by occupants of a vehicle who accuse her of standing in the road and blocking their way. During the confrontation, the 22-year-old suspect is seen allegedly assaulting the woman. Free State police spokesperson Sergeant Mahlomola Peter Kareli confirmed the arrest on Thursday, saying investigators moved swiftly after the video surfaced online.

Police have appealed for calm while the investigation continues and urged the public to allow due process to take its course. “We strongly plead for calm and space to allow the police investigation to take its natural course. The SAPS views all acts of violence, particularly against the vulnerable, in a serious light and is committed to ensuring that justice is served.” The suspect is expected to make his first appearance in the Bloemfontein Magistrate’s Court on Friday, June 12. “Further updates will be communicated as the investigation progresses.”
