The Constitutional Court has brought finality to the dispute over the Zulu throne, confirming King Misuzulu kaZwelithini as the lawful monarch and closing a protracted and painful chapter for the royal household. AsThe Witnessreported, the ruling ends years of litigation and competing claims that followed his accession in 2021 after the death of King Goodwill Zwelithini kaBhekuzulu. Monarchies across the world are navigating difficult terrain. Some face reputational strain, others generational transition, succession pressures or questions about relevance in modern democratic societies. These developments have prompted debate about accountability, transparency and the evolving role of hereditary institutions.

They are reminders that legitimacy today rests not only on lineage, but on public confidence and adherence to legal and ethical standards. In South Africa, traditional leadership remains woven into the daily lives of millions and forms part of the governance fabric of provinces such as KwaZulu-Natal. It is not ceremonial alone.

That is precisely why stability within the Zulu monarchy matters beyond the royal household itself. This judgment must therefore usher in a period of calm, reconciliation and institutional rebuilding. As Thulasizwe Buthelezi noted, it is “an opportunity for the royal family to unite and serve under the leadership of His Majesty the King”.

King Misuzulu must now be afforded the space to define his reign and imprint a legacy that is inclusive, reflective and unifying. The legal contest has ended; the work of healing, restoring trust and strengthening the institution begins.
