One person was killed and four others injured, one critically, in a horrific multi-vehicle collision on the N2 near Empangeni on Tuesday morning. KwaZulu Private Ambulance Service spokesperson Craig Botha said paramedics were dispatched to the scene at about 8:50am, to the cane fields section of the N2, just north of the R102 intersection. “Emergency services arrived to find a chaotic scene involving four vehicles.
One light delivery vehicle, two light motor vehicles and a truck,” said Botha. The impact of the collision caused extensive damage and resulted in the truck overturning, which complicated rescue efforts. According to Botha, paramedics immediately established a triage area and assessed five patients involved in the crash.
“One person was declared deceased at the scene, having sustained fatal injuries before emergency services arrived,” he said. Of the four survivors, one patient sustained critical, life-threatening injuries and required advanced life support intervention to stabilise their condition. Two others were treated for serious injuries, while a fourth patient sustained minor injuries.

“All injured patients were treated on scene before being transported to a nearby hospital for further medical care,” Botha said. The incident required close co-ordination between multiple emergency services. Fire department crews worked to secure the wreckage and assist with possible extrication, while the Road Traffic Inspectorate and police managed traffic and scene safety. The collision severely affected traffic flow in both north- and southbound lanes, with the emergency lane and left lane obstructed for several hours.
