I will start with a confession that I have ever been a member of zipereganyu. Yes, that arrangement where people come together and contribute money daily, weekly or monthly and later share after saving for some time. We contributed monthly and it was smooth.

But with time, I rescinded because it piled pressure on me. Others continue to do zipereganyu and they are fine, actually advancing their businesses along the way. But I am afraid these zipereganyu are becoming a menace in society.

We have women who earn little, but joining such groups that demand as high as K500 000 per month when they do not even make half of that amount. It results is desperate women forever going to men’s inboxes asking for financial help to fulfil their zipereganyu obligations. We even have housewives literally starving their children to save money to contribute to their zipereganyu.

Wives take part of housekeeping money for the same. Then we have group leaders who at times abused their powers. While members will go to the moon and back to make contributions, group treasurers misuse the money and when time comes to share the spoils, they are nowhere to be found after swindling it.

We recently had a case where a prominent gospel artist was embroiled in a scandal of zipereganyu and she went into for failing to account for zipereganyu money. Of course, I understand she is trying to sort out the situation, but many members of her group have been inconvenienced. The challenge with ziperenganyu is that they are ungovernable.

There are always some members who are powerful, manipulative and dishonest. If we go around, we will hear stories of people who lost their money to powerful members of these zipereganyu groups. Then we have partners whose women rob them in day light in the name of love.

These desperate women beg from several men at the same time so they can have enough money to contribute hoping to make a huge cash out at the end of the money or year. I don’t know if we all understand that zipereganyu is supposed to support and make our existing businesses better and not just a means of accumulating funds. If that is the case, then we can as well just keep the money in the bank where we are assured of safety.

Then we have this strange zipereganyu arrangement where women pay a fixed amount every day to their treasurer. This is the type that drives women wild, begging from man to man and denying their children balanced meals. At the end of the day, there is nothing wrong with ziperenganyu.

But if you have to scramble for daily, weekly or monthly contributions, it means you are not ready for such an arrangement. Leave it for those who can afford it.
