Under the project, six goat pens have been established, as well as a dip tank and solar-powered borehole.

In his acceptance speech during a handover ceremony in Magedleni Village the project chairperson, Mr Bani Dube said the goat project will help to alleviate poverty. “Having this project handed over to us means that we will not have a source of income.

This will greatly help us as the money we have been getting for pension isn’t enough to get us by.

We thank NSSA for the project.

We will sell the goat and share the money.

We are also glad that we have the necessary facilities to sustain our project such as water, goat pens and a dip tank,” he said.

In a speech read on his behalf by a board member, Mr David Dzatsunga NSSA board chairman, Mr Christopher Dube said the goat project is part of their ongoing efforts to give back to the communities that have entrusted them with their social security needs.

He said the project was initially conceptualised as a response to the economic challenges faced by pensioners, which were further exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic. “Today, we gather to mark a significant milestone in our ongoing efforts to give back to the communities that have entrusted us with their social security needs.

On behalf of the National Social Security Authority (NSSA), it is an honour to hand over the goat farming project to this vibrant team of pensioners.

As an organisation mandated to ensure the financial security of workers, we recognised the need to explore innovative ways to supplement the statutory pensions we provide. “The idea was to empower our pensioners with additional means of sustenance, thereby enhancing their quality of life.

The goat project has shown promising results, highlighting its potential to improve food security, stabilise food availability, and create a sustainable income source for the pensioners,” he said.

Mr Dube said they will continue working with the project committee comprised of pensioners to ensure sustainability of the project.

He said beneficiaries will also be supported with training.

He said the project comes with various benefits such as a sustainable source of nutrition through goat meat and milk, creating employment opportunities and generating income through the sale of goats and goat products. @DubeMatutuShare on FacebookPost on XFollow usSave
