Ministry of Education, Science and Technology has dispatched 262 mattresses to Nsanje Secondary School after a video went viral showing poor beddings in students’ hostels. South West Education Division (Swed) division manager Feggie Mphasi Mwale along with her deputy Chimwemwe Banda and the school’s former student Nixon Kaitano presented the mattresses to the school on Tuesday. Said Mphasi Mwale: “Plans are in pipeline for the ministry to rehabilitate the institution to become conducive for learning.
Currently, we are implementing three projects, namely girls’ hostel, a kitchen and classroom block courtesy of the European Union-funded Improving Secondary School in Malawi project. “I appeal to learners, teachers and school management to take care of the mattresses. We need our minister to find all 262 when he comes to inspect the institution.” The school’s head boy Thomas Dinyero thanked the ministry for the swift response, saying the mattresses will bring comfort for students.
Nsanje South West legislator Walter Nyamilandu, who inspected the school on Sunday to appreciate the challenges, also thanked the ministry for the response. “The donation of mattresses shows that government is interested to bail out Nsanje Secondary School from its challenges,” he said. Nsanje district commissioner Sandram Naluso described the gesture as a motivation to learners. “The government has responded swiftly after the students and the legislator asked for help,” he said.
