The National Railways of Zimbabwe (NRZ) has announced plans to roll out regular passenger services on the Harare–Mutare route, following overwhelming support for its Sanganayi/Hlanganani/Kumbanyayi Train during the recent Travel Expo. Over 1,000 passengers used the service during the exhibition, confirming strong public interest in rail transport. In a press statement issued on Friday, NRZ said the enthusiastic response had inspired the organisation to actively pursue more regular train services across the country.
“We sincerely appreciate all the feedback received — including suggestions that will help us improve the service going forward,” the parastatal said. The Harare–Mutare train will resume in the week beginning 13 October 2025, with fares set at US$5 per passenger. NRZ said the decision was part of its broader effort to make rail travel more accessible and affordable to Zimbabweans.
During the expo, the Mutare service featured sleeper and dining coaches, which came with premium fares. However, NRZ said its long-term plan is to introduce standard and economy class coaches to provide more affordable options for regular leisure and passenger services. The rail operator emphasised that the Travel Expo experience had shown that Zimbabweans are willing to embrace passenger trains if services are made reliable, affordable, and convenient.

This, it said, would also help reduce congestion on the country’s roads. NRZ highlighted that feedback from stakeholders and passengers during the expo would be critical in shaping the next phase of passenger services. Suggestions raised included improving frequency, lowering fares, and adding more comfort options. “We will continue to keep the public informed as we roll out these plans,” the NRZ said, adding that it remains committed to providing reliable rail travel for both leisure and business passengers.
