In a short interview with IOL, British politician Nigel Farage says US president Donald Trump is the only global leader “brave enough” to openly speak about what he described as‘problems’ in South Africa. Farage spoke to IOL on the sidelines of the World Economic Forum (WEF) in Davos, Switzerland.

Farage said Trump’s willingness to publicly confront the issue set him apart from other world leaders who, he claimed, preferred silence or caution. “You know it’s a problem, I know it’s a problem, but he’s actually calling it out,” Farage said. “Using the word genocide in any context is problematic, but it is a problem,” said Farage.

His comments come amid renewed international spotlight around political rhetoric, immigration, and narratives relating to South Africa’s socio-economic and security challenges. During the interview, Farage was also asked whether, if he were UK Prime Minister, he would consider implementing refugee-style programmes similar to those implemented in the US to “rescue” Afrikaners from South Africa. “No, there’s enough South Africans in the UK already,” Farage said. Farage, a hardliner populist politician and nationalist has been a big mover of Brexit and has been particularly vocal on issues of migration, identity and national sovereignty.
