Malawians can look forward to a more reliable and efficient electricity supply as Alfred Nhlema, the new Board Chairperson of Electricity Supply Corporation of Malawi (ESCOM), pledges to drive transparency, operational excellence, and expanded access to clean energy across the country.
Nhlema, also Chief Wholesale Banking Officer at NBS Bank Plc, emphasized that his leadership will focus on strengthening governance, improving reliability, and supporting investments that make electricity affordable and sustainable for all Malawians.
âI look forward to contributing to the transformation of the power sector and ensuring that ESCOM continues to fulfil its mandate in a transparent, accountable, and forward-looking manner,â said Nhlema.

He added that working closely with the Board, management, government, and stakeholders will be key to enhancing efficiency and service delivery.
Nhlema expressed gratitude to President Arthur Peter Mutharika for the confidence placed in him, saying he accepts the role with humility and a strong commitment to national development.

âMy focus will be on promoting operational excellence, enhancing governance, and supporting investments that expand access to affordable and clean energy for all Malawians,â he said.
Nhlema is a seasoned banker with extensive experience in structured corporate banking solutions.
He is a graduate of the highly prestigious Harvard Business School â Advanced Management Program (2024) and further holds a Master of Arts degree in Economics obtained from the University of Malawi.
Nhlema also completed his Executive Development Program with Stellenbosch Business School in 2016.
