Shock and horror swept through a Pietermaritzburg township after the body of a newborn baby was found wrapped in cloth, stuffed inside a plastic bag and dumped in a rubbish bin. The infant, believed to have been placed in a fridge before being discarded, was discovered by a vagrant rummaging through the bin for recyclable items on Wednesday morning at Edendale Lay Centre in Pietermaritzburg. According to residents, the vagrant initially thought the plastic bag contained meat because of its weight.
“He said he felt something heavy inside the packet and assumed it was meat. When he opened it, he realised it was a baby,” said a resident who asked not to be named. The man alerted community members, who rushed to the scene and confirmed the grim discovery.
Residents said the woman suspected of dumping the baby was renting in the area and was not originally from the community. “There was nothing we could suspect. She already has a child who is alive.

We are tired and we need to put a stop to it. Ward councillor Thembinkosi Zondi condemned the incident, describing it as “cruel”.
