New Warriors coach appointment imminent – ZIFA

Story by Anashe MurombedziPLANS to appoint a new head coach for the Warriors are at an advanced stage, the Zimbabwe Football Association (ZIFA) has announced.This follows the termination of former Warriors coach Michael Nees’ contract on Wednesday due to a string of poor results during his 14-month tenure.The association’s executive committee is working on a roadmap to find a suitable replacement, with a plan to present specifications and credentials to the committee within the next three days.The German coach, who was appointed in July 2024, left the Warriors after just two wins and seven draws in 16 matches, with his last match being a disappointing one-nil loss to Lesotho in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers.His two wins were consecutive victories against Namibia, which secured Zimbabwe’s spot at the AFCON tournament.ZIFA president Nqobile Magwizi revealed that the association’s executive committee was working on a roadmap to appoint a new coach.“We need to have clarity as to what it is that we are looking for, so, that will be presented in the next three days, and of course, the executive committee will decide once those people have presented their credentials,” he said.Meanwhile, the Warriors are set to play friendly matches against Algeria and Qatar during the FIFA international break next month, as they prepare for the AFCON tournament set for Morocco in December.Zimbabwe is in Group B, alongside Egypt, Angola, and South Africa.In another development, ZIFA has also signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Ministry of Primary & Secondary Education to develop junior football, with plans to launch a provincial junior tournament for under-13, 14, and 17 teams starting next year.The association is focused on identifying and nurturing young talent, and the tournament will provide a platform for schools to participate in talent identification
