Motorists travelling on the N3 through Pietermaritzburg will face a full overnight road closure between the Cedara and Armitage Road interchanges next month. The South African National Roads Agency SOC Limited (Sanral) confirmed that the closure is required to conduct luminance testing on newly installed lighting along the route. The N3 will be fully closed in both directions from 8pm on Saturday, March 14, until 4:30 am on Sunday, March 15.
The closure affects the stretch between the Armitage Road interchange (Midlands Mall) and the Cedara interchange. During this period, traffic will be diverted via the R103. “Construction of the lighting on this portion of the N3 is nearing completion, and testing the luminance levels of the lighting is an important step in ensuring the quality of this system, which will substantially improve safety for all users of the road,” said Jason Lowe, SANRAL’s KZN Provincial Specialist Geometrics Engineer.
The luminance measurement test area includes the Peter Brown and Hilton interchanges. Access to the N3 will not be possible at these interchanges during the closure. The N3 northbound carriageway will be fully closed at Exit 82 – Armitage Road (Midlands Mall). Light motor vehicles under eight tonnes will be diverted onto the R103 (Old Howick Road) to rejoin the N3 at Cedara.
