Motorists using the N3 between Westville and Pinetown are advised to expect major temporary lane and full-road closures this weekend as construction on the N3 upgrade project continues. The South African National Roads Agency (Sanral) announced that several closures will take place between December 6 and 9, affecting both east and westbound traffic near the M7 interchange, St James Avenue off-ramp and Paradise Valley. The shutdowns are required to allow contractors to place bridge beams on the Langford Road bridge, a key stage in the upgrade between the Westville Viaduct and Paradise Valley Interchange, said Sanral KwaZulu-Natal geometrics specialist engineer Jason Lowe.
N3 fully closed at the M7 (Exit 20). All traffic will be diverted onto the M7, then rerouted to the M7 South, M13 East/West or M19 North. Full shutdown with diversions as per Closure 2 (eastbound) and Closure 6 (westbound).
N3 closed at St James Avenue (Exit 13). Traffic will be directed onto the M32 and then the M13 before rejoining the N3 via the M7 on-ramp. As an alternative, motorists may remain on the M13 to reconnect at Key Ridge.

Lowe said strict traffic accommodation measures will be in place for the safety of road users and construction teams. Heavy vehicles are urged to delay trips, use alternative staging areas, or reroute via the M7, M19 or N2 to avoid congestion. Public transport operators should ensure drivers are aware of the diversions that may affect commuter routes. “All road users are advised to plan ahead and, where possible, leave earlier than usual,” Lowe added.
