Vice President Dr Constantino Chiwenga has called on the populace to lead humane lives of love and selflessness and desist from the growing spirit of primitive accumulation of wealth at the expense of others He was speaking at the memorial service of his late sister Mrs Magret Machekabuwe in Marondera on Saturday, who passed on in 2018 and described her as an epitome of selflessness and hard work VP Chiwenga said his sister was a hardworking woman who loved her people, her family and her nation to the extent that she sacrificed and risked a lot by partaking in liberation war activities through her work as a collaborator (chimbwido) and worked honestly and tirelessly to provide for her family after the death of her husband in 1995 The VP emphasised on the need to leave a legacy of championing family values, community and national interest

His call came amidst spirited Government efforts to champion rapid economic development towards an empowered upper-middle income economy by 2030 as espoused by President Mnangagwa Under Vision 2030, President Mnangagwa’s desire is to see every citizen having access and enjoying the benefits of a middle-income economy “I want to express my gratitude to the families who have gathered here to honour my sister, Magret Machekabuwe In our family, we were nine siblings, three boys and six girls,” said VP Chiwenga

“I share this because it’s essential that we love one another, while we are still alive and even after we have lost loved ones, our love must endure “As we reflect on life, let us remember that when we leave this earth, we will be with the Lord I urge both those in Government and the general populace to recognise our responsibility to care for the poor We must move away from the mindset of primitive accumulation of wealth

Instead, let us strive to leave a positive legacy “Our heroes fought courageously so that we could utilise the resources of this country in a manner that is pleasing to God,” said VP Chiwenga The VP said there is no better time to be reminding one another about these virtues than in the month where the country celebrates heroes who brought the independence the nation enjoys today as well as the Defence Forces that sustain and guarantee independence and self-determination “Let us strive to leave a legacy of love and service to our community, as emphasised in the Bible with the story of Lazarus and the rich man,” said VP Chiwenga

“It serves no purpose to live in abundance while others suffer in poverty Ultimately, we all face the end of life, but it is how we are remembered that truly matters My sister embodied this principle, she lived with integrity and worked tirelessly to care for her children after her husband’s passing “During this holiday, let us celebrate responsibly and ensure that the spirit of our heroes lives on through our actions

“We must remember those who sacrificed their lives for our freedom and uphold the values they fought for “When we lack soldiers, we lack protection as a country This is why we dedicate a day to honour them As we celebrate our heroes and our soldiers, let us do so responsibly,” said VP Chiwenga
