Malawi University of Business and Applied Sciences (Mubas) has started orientation sessions for first year students ahead of the 2025/26 academic year to prepare them for transition from secondary school to university life. Speaking during the opening of the orientation on Monday, Mubas Vice-Chancellor Associate Professor Nancy Chitera said engaging new students early is crucial. “University life is very different from secondary school life and orientation helps prepare students for what lies ahead,” she said.
Chitera explained that the sessions introduce students to the university’s rules and regulations, academic expectations, security protocols and available support systems, including guidance on financial assistance and where to seek help if needed. This year, Mubas has admitted 3 117 new students across multiple entry routes. Of these, 2 200 are generic students selected through the National Council for Higher Education while the rest are enrolled through economic fee-paying, extended degree and diploma programmes.
Chitera said mature entry students will undergo orientation over the weekend. Once continuing learners return on January 26, Mubas’s total student population is expected to exceed 12 000. Sally Rashid, a first year sbachelor of commerce in banking and finance student, described her first day as exciting and encouraged young girls in secondary school to aim high.
