Football fever is set to sweep across Pietermaritzburg and surrounding areas this Easter, with local associations gearing up to host their annual tournaments, events that continue to play a vital role in community sport. Following Tuesday’s draw at City Hall, attended by a large number of teams, the Local Organising Committee (LOC) confirmed that about 50 teams are expected to take part in this year’s four-day football festival. The competition will feature both men’s and women’s divisions.

Organisers are aiming for a more streamlined and competitive tournament in 2026 after last year’s edition attracted more than 60 teams. To address challenges experienced previously, a R500 “commitment fee” has been introduced for participating teams. LOC member Llyod Wiltwer said the move was necessary after several teams failed to honour fixtures in the latter stages of last year’s tournament.

“Although last year’s event was massive, we experienced a number of walkovers after the first two days,” said Wiltwer. “Some teams registered for multiple tournaments taking place over the Easter weekend and failed to fulfil all their fixtures.
