In a bizarre twist to an e-hailing hijacking, one of the hijackers allegedly donned a wig and dress to disguise himself as a woman while posing as part of a couple requesting a ride in Matsulu, in Mpumalanga. According to Prem Balram, spokesperson for Reaction Unit South Africa (Rusa), in a statement released on Thursday night, the incident took place on February 13,reportsThe Witness. The hijackers allegedly posed as a couple and requested an e-hailing ride near Boxer Matsulu Shopping Complex at around 20:00.
“The occupants initially requested transport to the Matsulu and N4 crossing in Mpumalanga before asking that the trip be extended to the Kaapmuiden hiking area.” Balram said it is alleged that when the driver and his friend reached a remote area near Uitkyk, they were held at gunpoint. They were forced from the vehicle and left in a nearby sugar cane plantation. Balram added the attackers fled in a white Suzuki Ertiga.
“The vehicle reportedly has a dent on the rear bumper and a dent on the rear right panel. The victims were later assisted by three passing motorcyclists.” He urged anyone with information regarding the vehicle to contact Rusa on 086 123 4333. The safety of e-hailing drivers was recently thrust into the spotlight after the brutal murder of Isaac Satla was caught on a dashcam in Pretoria in February. Six people have since been charged with his murder.
