The Bank of Mozambique, in its role as regulator of the national financial system, has announced that the reserves of country’s Sovereign Wealth Fund totalled 116.8 million US dollars as of February 10. The Bank of Mozambique is responsible for the operational management of the Fund, including investment of its resources on the international financial markets. Currently, the revenue for the fund comes from the production of liquefied natural gas (LNG) in offshore areas one and four of the Rovuma Basin.

In future, other oil and gas projects are expected to channel revenue to the fund. According to data from the Central Bank’ website, these figures correspond to an increase of 6.8 million US dollars compared to the initial capital of 109.9 recorded on 10 December 2025, when the fund became operational. “The profit recorded resulted from interest on very short-term (overnight) deposits made with three foreign counterparties, namely, Bred Banque Populaire of France; The Toronto-Dominion Bank of Canada; and Sumitomo Mitsui Trust Bank and Ltd.

According to the document, the portfolio management “strictly observes the restrictions defined in the Fund’s Investment Policy, namely: prohibition of investment in instruments issued by Mozambican companies, in local currency, real estate or infrastructure located in Mozambique; restriction on participation in real estate companies, infrastructure companies or funds with a primary focus on Mozambique; and prohibition of operations that could compromise national financial stability.” “The portfolio follows a conservative and diversified approach, based on strategic benchmark indices that favor low-risk and highly liquid instruments. However, the Central Bank’s document does not provide details regarding the operational costs charged for the management of the fund’s investment portfolio.
